Known in the agricultural context as a causal agent of black mildew or soot-like fungal infections, this pathogen colonizes the surface of plant leaves and stems. As an obligate parasite, it forms complex mycelial structures that extract nutrients from the host's surface tissues without necessarily killing the leaf immediately.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are members of the Paullinia genus within the Sapindaceae family. In commercial and natural settings, Meliola paulliniae is frequently observed in tropical environments where high humidity and warm temperatures persist throughout the growing season, creating optimal conditions for spore germination and colony expansion.
