Meliola praetervisa is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the order Meliolales, often referred to as a type of black mildew. Unlike superficial sooty molds that merely grow on honeydew secreted by insects, this fungus is an obligate epiphytic parasite. It establishes a direct physiological connection with the host plant's epidermal cells using specialized structures called haustoria, which penetrate the surface to extract nutrients.

This pathogen primarily targets a variety of woody plants, shrubs, and certain tropical crops. In agricultural settings, it is commonly observed on plants with dense foliage or those situated in environments with limited air circulation. While it may not always kill the host immediately, the presence of the fungus significantly weakens the plant, reducing its vigor and aesthetic value in ornamental horticulture.

The primary symptom is the formation of dark, crusty, or velvety colonies on the surfaces of leaves, petioles, and young stems. These colonies are firmly attached to the plant surface and cannot be easily wiped off, unlike the dusty soot associated with other mold types. As the disease progresses, the fungal mat covers a large portion of the leaf area, inhibiting photosynthesis and leading to chlorosis or premature senescence.

Environmental conditions are critical for the development of Meliola praetervisa. The fungus thrives in warm, humid climates where moisture lingers on plant surfaces for extended periods. Spore dispersal is facilitated by high humidity, rainfall splashes, and the movement of insects that act as vectors. Without proper airflow, the fungus can quickly spread throughout a greenhouse or an entire plantation.

  • Maintaining proper plant spacing to ensure adequate light and air circulation.
