Meliola sparsipoda is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the order Meliolales, commonly referred to as "black mildews." These fungi are recognized as obligate biotrophs that colonize the aerial parts of plants, particularly leaves and stems, forming distinct dark structures that can significantly impact the health of the host plant in tropical regions.
The causal agent is an ascomycete fungus. Unlike saprophytic sooty molds, Meliola species utilize specialized structures known as appressoria to penetrate the plant cuticle. This allows the fungus to siphon nutrients directly from the living plant cells, thereby acting as a true parasite that can cause physiological stress to its host.
This pathogen primarily targets broad-leaved woody plants and shrubs in humid tropical and subtropical environments. The wide host range makes it a significant concern for botanical collections and specific tropical crops, where high leaf density provides an ideal substrate for the fungus to establish its dark, sprawling colonies.
The primary symptom of infection is the development of dark, velvety, or sooty-looking fungal mats on the surface of leaves. As the infection progresses, the foliage may exhibit chlorosis, and in severe cases, premature defoliation can occur. The presence of this mat significantly reduces the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis effectively, weakening the host over time.
