This fungus is typically an epiphyte, meaning it grows on the surface of plant parts rather than invading the internal tissues directly, yet its impact remains significant.
The host range of Meliola subdentata primarily includes woody shrubs and trees, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. It is frequently observed in environments where canopy density is high and air circulation is poor, which maintains the microclimate necessary for fungal growth.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the appearance of dark, velvety, or sooty patches on the adaxial and sometimes abaxial surfaces of leaves. These patches are actually dense networks of fungal hyphae that cover the leaf blade, effectively shading the chlorophyll-containing cells from sunlight.

The fungus colonizes the honeydew deposits on leaf surfaces, which provides the necessary nutrients for its rapid expansion and colonization of the plant surface.
