Meliolaceae is a large family of ascomycetous fungi known for causing black mildew or dark leaf spots on a wide variety of plant hosts. These fungi are obligate biotrophs, meaning they survive and reproduce solely by extracting nutrients from the living tissues of host plants without killing them immediately, though they significantly weaken the host over time.

These pathogens are predominantly found in tropical and subtropical climates where high humidity and warm temperatures persist. They exhibit a broad host range, infecting numerous woody and herbaceous species, including important fruit trees, legumes, and various ornamental plants. The fungi typically form external dark mycelial mats that can cover significant portions of the foliage.

The primary symptom of infection is the development of dark, soot-like, or crusty patches on the surface of leaves, petioles, and occasionally green stems. Unlike superficial sooty molds that grow on honeydew, Meliolaceae penetrate the plant epidermis using specialized structures called haustoria. This direct interaction with the host cells allows the fungus to efficiently siphon off metabolites.

Conditions that favor the development of Meliolaceae include high relative humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air within plant canopies. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind and rain splash, enabling rapid colonization of susceptible tissues. Lack of proper pruning and insufficient plant spacing are critical factors that exacerbate the spread of the disease in agricultural settings.

The economic impact of Meliolaceae is linked to reduced photosynthetic capacity, as the dark fungal colonies block sunlight and may physically obstruct stomatal exchange. This leads to reduced plant vigor, premature leaf drop, and decreased fruit production. In ornamental nurseries, the presence of these fungi significantly lowers the aesthetic and commercial value of the plants.

Effective management and prevention of Meliolaceae infections involve several cultural and chemical practices:

  • Implementing regular pruning to improve airflow and light penetration within the canopy.
  • Maintaining optimal plant spacing to reduce micro-humidity levels near the foliage.
  • Sanitation, including the collection and disposal of infected plant material to reduce inoculum.
  • Application of protective copper-based fungicides or appropriate systemic fungicides during high-risk weather conditions.
