Meloderma is a fungal disease affecting coniferous trees, primarily caused by the ascomycete fungus Meloderma desmazieresii. This pathogen is categorized under the needle cast group of diseases. The fungus survives in infected fallen needles, where it develops fruiting bodies that release spores to initiate new infections during the growing season.

The primary host species for this fungus are pines, especially the Scots pine. The disease is particularly destructive in nurseries, young plantations, and ornamental settings. It poses the greatest threat to saplings and young trees, often leading to stunted growth, severe physiological stress, or total mortality if left untreated.

Symptoms of Meloderma infection include the appearance of yellow spots on the needles, which eventually turn reddish-brown or dark brown. A distinctive sign is the formation of black, oval-shaped apothecia (fruiting bodies) on the surface of the infected needles. Severely affected needles wither, die, and shed prematurely, causing the tree to lose its foliage density.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of the disease. High humidity, prolonged rainfall, and moderate temperatures provide optimal conditions for spore germination and infection. Dense plantings with poor air circulation significantly exacerbate the spread of the pathogen, as does the accumulation of infected leaf litter beneath the trees.
