The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Meloderma desmazieri, which specifically targets pine needles. This pathogen is a significant concern for both forest plantations and ornamental pine gardens, often leading to premature needle drop and weakened tree health.
The primary hosts for this fungus are various species of the Pinus genus, most notably the Scots pine. The infection is particularly prevalent in plantations where environmental conditions favor fungal growth and reproduction, often affecting younger trees more severely than mature ones.
Visible symptoms include the appearance of localized spots on the needles, which eventually darken as the fungal reproductive structures emerge. These structures break through the needle surface, causing the foliage to turn chlorotic and brown, followed by premature shedding that often starts from the lower branches.
The development and spread of Meloderma desmazieri are heavily dependent on climatic factors, especially high humidity and rainfall during the growing season. Warm and damp conditions facilitate spore germination, while poor airflow in dense plantings significantly accelerates the rate of infection transmission.
The economic and ecological damage is significant, as the reduction in photosynthetic leaf area causes a decline in tree vigor. Prolonged infection inhibits the tree's annual growth, reduces its aesthetic value, and increases its susceptibility to secondary pests and environmental stressors, potentially leading to tree mortality.
