Meloseirales represent a taxonomic order of diatoms that, while typically found in aquatic environments, can become an invasive nuisance in modern agricultural systems. In greenhouse environments and hydroponic operations, their uncontrolled growth is often categorized as a biological infestation that interferes with plant growth cycles.
These organisms are characterized by their cylindrical cells that form long, distinctive chains. Within hydroponic nutrient solutions, they thrive due to the presence of dissolved fertilizers and light exposure. Once established, they can coat surfaces, pipes, and root systems with a persistent, slimy film that disrupts the delicate balance of the cultivation environment.
The primary crops affected are those cultivated using nutrient film technique (NFT) or deep water culture (DWC). By covering the root zone, Meloseirales create a barrier that restricts oxygen exchange and nutrient absorption, which is critical for the metabolic processes of high-value greenhouse vegetables such as lettuce, herbs, and tomatoes.
Visible symptoms include the presence of brown or greenish deposits inside irrigation tubes and on the root mass. If left unmanaged, this lead to significant plant stress, characterized by chlorosis, stunted development, and reduced marketability of the produce due to the overall decline in plant vigor.
Effective management strategies focus on preventing the light-driven colonization of the system. Key practices include sealing all nutrient reservoirs to prevent light entry, implementing regular cleaning cycles using hydrogen peroxide, and installing inline UV sterilization units. Maintaining proper nutrient chemistry and filter maintenance also prevents the accumulation of the biomass associated with this algal order.
