Melosira varians is a species of filamentous diatom algae that acts as a significant biological contaminant in controlled-environment agriculture, particularly in hydroponic systems. While it is not a pathogenic fungus in the traditional sense, its ability to proliferate rapidly creates an environment that suppresses plant growth and disrupts the physiological processes of the root system.

This organism primarily targets crops grown in deep water culture (DWC) or nutrient film technique (NFT) systems. Lettuce, herbs, and other leafy greens are most susceptible to its effects. By competing for essential nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen, the algae strip the solution of vital components, leading to stunted plant development and metabolic stress.

The primary symptom is the appearance of a dark, mucilaginous, or brown film covering the roots, pipes, and growing media. This algal coat creates a physical barrier that restricts oxygen diffusion to the roots, often leading to secondary infections caused by opportunistic pathogens, resulting in root decay and eventual loss of the crop.

Development is driven by the interaction between high nutrient concentration, elevated water temperatures, and light exposure. In hydroponic setups, light leakage into the reservoir or irrigation lines provides the necessary energy for Melosira varians to bloom, while warm, stagnant water acts as a catalyst for exponential growth across the entire system.

Prevention and mitigation strategies focus on eliminating the conditions that favor algal proliferation:

  • Strict light-shielding of reservoirs and nutrient supply lines to eliminate photosynthesis.
  • Implementing UV-C sterilization for circulating nutrient solutions.
