Memnoniella (Lat. Memnoniella) is a genus of imperfect fungi belonging to the Deuteromycetes, which are often classified as saprotrophs or weak parasites. The pathogen Memnoniella echinata is morphologically similar to the Stachybotrys genus. This fungus is capable of developing on various organic substrates, causing spots and rots, and often acting as a secondary agent when the immunity of cultivated plants is weakened.

This fungus affects a wide range of crops, including cereals, industrial crops, vegetables, and ornamental plants. It poses a particular threat in greenhouse conditions and during the storage of agricultural products, where high humidity facilitates the rapid spread of spores and mycelial growth.

The main symptoms of the disease include the appearance of characteristic dark olive, almost black velvety coatings on the surface of the affected tissues. The infection often manifests as necrotic spots that eventually merge, leading to the death of leaves, stems, or fruits. In storage conditions, contamination of seeds and fruits is observed, accompanied by tissue softening and discoloration.

The development of the pathogen is directly dependent on microclimatic conditions: the optimal environment for spore germination is a temperature between +20°C and +28°C with a relative humidity above 80–85%. The fungus actively spreads through conidia, which are dispersed by air currents, irrigation water, or via contaminated equipment and storage containers.

The economic impact of Memnoniella lies in the reduction of photosynthetic activity in infected plants, stunted growth, and loss of product marketability. In cases of severe seed infestation, germination rates drop sharply, leading to significant yield losses. Furthermore, some species of this genus are capable of producing mycotoxins that jeopardize the quality and safety of the produce.

Protection and preventive measures include:

  • Adherence to crop rotation and spatial isolation of fields.
  • Thorough removal and destruction of crop residues that serve as sources of infection.
  • Regulation of air humidity in greenhouses through effective ventilation systems.
  • Use of fungicides for pre-sowing seed treatment and spraying of vegetative plants.
  • Disinfection of storage facilities and containers before harvesting and storage.
