These pathogens typically infect a broad range of deciduous hosts, including species like beech, oak, and maple. The mycelium invades the wood tissue, decomposing lignin and cellulose, which creates structural fragility. In an agronomic and forestry context, the presence of these fungi indicates a breakdown in the natural defense mechanisms of the tree, often linked to age or stress.

Diagnostic symptoms are often hidden until the late stages of infection when large, fleshy fruiting bodies emerge at the base of the trunk or on major roots. Internally, the affected wood exhibits a white, bleached appearance with distinctive black zone lines. As the root system loses its integrity, trees often display signs of decline, such as yellowing foliage and stunted annual growth.

Favorable conditions for the development of Meripilaceae include poor soil drainage, high moisture levels, and pre-existing wounds on the root collar. The fungus can persist in the soil for several years, using rhizomorphs to spread to the root systems of healthy adjacent trees. Consequently, the disease often manifests in circular patterns or clusters within a stand.
