The Meruliaceae family comprises various species of basidiomycete fungi recognized primarily as wood-decay agents. In an agricultural context, these organisms are significant because they attack fruit trees, windbreaks, and essential wooden infrastructure. They are biologically classified as saprotrophs or facultative parasites, capable of breaking down complex plant polymers to extract nutrients, which leads to the structural collapse of the affected wood.
The disease is caused by fungal spores entering the tree through wounds, pruning cuts, or natural fissures in the bark. Depending on the species, the infection can cause either white or brown rot, which are categorized as destructive types of wood decay. These fungi decompose the cellular wall components, fundamentally altering the physical stability and physiological health of the plant.
Symptoms of an infestation usually include the appearance of distinct, often wrinkled or honeycomb-like fruiting bodies on the surface of the wood. Internally, the wood becomes discolored, fragile, and soft, eventually turning into a crumbly mass. Growers may observe stunted growth, yellowing leaves, or premature fruit drop in infected trees as the transport system of the plant becomes compromised by the fungal activity.
Favorable conditions for the development of Meruliaceae include high humidity, poor aeration, and stable temperatures. These fungi spread primarily through wind-dispersed spores that can remain dormant until they land on a suitable substrate. Agricultural environments with dense canopy cover or poor drainage are particularly susceptible to rapid colonization and spread of these fungal pathogens.
Effective protection and prevention strategies rely on rigorous sanitation. This includes the immediate removal of infected branches or debris, which should be destroyed rather than composted. Proper pruning techniques, such as making clean cuts and sealing them with appropriate protectants, help minimize the entry points for spores. Ensuring that wooden structures are kept dry and treated with fungicides or preservatives is essential to prevent structural degradation.
