As an ascomycete fungus, it primarily acts as a plant pathogen, colonizing the host's tissues and deriving nutrients at the expense of the plant's health. This disease mainly affects trees and woody shrubs, though some horticultural varieties are also susceptible. The pathogen invades the plant through stomata or wounds caused by pests and mechanical damage. Once established, the fungus spreads through the vascular or intercellular spaces, weakening the host structure and interfering with essential nutrient transport.
Symptoms of Mesniera infection usually appear as necrotic spots on the foliage, which expand and merge over time. Under favorable conditions, the development of small, dark fruiting bodies becomes visible on the infected tissue. As the disease progresses, the leaves exhibit chlorosis, eventually leading to premature defoliation and a significant reduction in the plant's vigor.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of this disease. Periods of high humidity, heavy rainfall, and moderate temperatures provide the necessary moisture for fungal sporulation and germination. Poor field ventilation and high density of plantings significantly increase the risk of rapid disease transmission, turning a localized issue into a widespread infection.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Sanitation is the first line of defense: infected plant material should be pruned and destroyed immediately to reduce the inoculum load. Maintaining adequate spacing and proper canopy aeration helps reduce humidity around the leaves. In severe cases, the application of targeted fungicides should be carried out according to local agricultural regulations to prevent further spread.
