The Mesophelliaceae family represents a unique group of hypogeous (underground) basidiomycete fungi. It is essential to clarify that these organisms are not plant diseases in the agronomic sense. Instead, they are beneficial symbiotic fungi that form mycorrhizal associations with the roots of specific tree species, particularly in Australian forest ecosystems.

The primary agents are fungi from the genus Mesophellia. Unlike pathogenic fungi that attack crops, these organisms function as facilitators for nutrient uptake. Their biology is adapted to living beneath the soil surface, where they derive carbon from their host trees in exchange for soil-derived minerals and water.

These fungi do not target agricultural crops; they are strictly associated with native woody plants such as Eucalyptus and Acacia species. There are no symptoms of infection or tissue damage.
