Description

Sooty mold refers to a group of fungal diseases caused by members of the Metacapnodiaceae family. These fungi grow as epiphytes on the surface of leaves, stems, and fruits, forming a dense, dark-colored mycelium that resembles a layer of soot.

The primary driver for the colonization of these fungi is honeydew, a sticky, sugary substance excreted by sap-sucking insects such as aphids, scale insects, whiteflies, and mealybugs. The mold feeds on these secretions rather than directly on the plant tissue, yet it remains a significant agricultural concern.

Sooty mold affects a wide range of hosts, particularly fruit trees like citrus and apple, as well as various ornamental shrubs. The presence of the fungus is characterized by a black or dark-brown powdery coating that can often be wiped off, although the underlying issue of insect infestation remains.

Development is favored by high humidity, poor air circulation, and warm temperatures, especially in environments where insect populations are uncontrolled. While the fungus is non-parasitic, the layer it creates blocks sunlight, which restricts photosynthesis and stunts the plant's growth over time.

Control strategies must prioritize the elimination of the honeydew-producing insects through the use of systemic insecticides or horticultural oils. Additionally, regular pruning to improve airflow and the application of fungicides can help clean the foliage and prevent the secondary fungal growth from returning.
