Metapochonia microbactrospora is an entomopathogenic fungus that serves as a highly effective biological control agent against plant-parasitic nematodes. Rather than being a plant disease, it is a beneficial organism that protects crops by infecting and consuming the eggs and larvae of harmful soil-dwelling pests.

The fungus targets major nematode pests, such as root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), which cause significant economic losses in various agricultural crops, including vegetables and ornamentals. By acting as a parasite of the nematodes, this fungus effectively reduces the population density of the pests in the root zone.
