Metarhizium (Metarhizium anisopliae) is not a plant disease, but rather a powerful tool in biological pest control. It is an entomopathogenic fungus that specifically targets harmful insects, functioning as a biological insecticide. Its primary role in agriculture is to reduce the pressure of soil-dwelling pests on crops by inducing lethal infections in target insect species.

The fungus acts as a pathogen exclusively to arthropods, primarily insects. Unlike diseases that destroy plants, Metarhizium infects insects through contact. Once the fungal spores adhere to the insect's cuticle, they germinate and produce enzymes that penetrate the body, leading to the internal colonization of the pest and its subsequent death.

Symptoms of the infection in insects include sluggishness and eventual mortality. A clear sign of the fungus's presence is the formation of a dense, olive-green fungal mat (mycelium) covering the insect's corpse. This green growth indicates that the fungus has successfully completed its cycle and is releasing more spores into the soil environment.

Environmental conditions are crucial for the effectiveness of Metarhizium. It thrives in soils with moderate to high moisture levels and temperatures between 18°C and 25°C. In extremely dry or waterlogged soils, the viability of the spores can be compromised, reducing the speed and efficacy of the pest control process.

The economic benefits of using this fungus are significant, especially in integrated pest management (IPM) programs. It is used to control wireworms, white grubs, and other subterranean pests. Prevention and protection strategies involve incorporating fungal formulations directly into the soil or the root zone during planting to establish a long-term defensive presence against future infestations.
