Description
Metarhizium flavoviride is a well-known entomopathogenic fungus. It is not a plant pathogen; instead, it is classified as a beneficial biological agent utilized extensively in modern agriculture to manage populations of devastating insect pests, particularly locusts and grasshoppers.
The fungus functions by infecting the insect host through direct contact. Conidia (spores) attach to the insect's cuticle, germinate, and penetrate the host's body. Once inside, the fungus colonizes the internal tissues, disrupting the insect's physiological processes and eventually leading to death.
This biological agent is used to protect a variety of agricultural crops, including cereals and pasture grasses, from massive outbreaks of defoliating insects.
