Metasphaeria is a genus of fungi belonging to the Ascomycetes class that causes various necrotic diseases in plants. These pathogens act primarily as facultative parasites, meaning they can survive on decaying plant matter but actively infect living tissues when the host plant is stressed or during favorable climatic conditions.
The host range for this fungus is extensive, covering both field crops like cereals and horticultural plants such as fruit trees and small fruits. The infection primarily targets leaves, stems, and sometimes fruit, disrupting the plant's physiological functions and leading to premature senescence and yield loss.
Key symptoms of the disease include the appearance of irregular or circular spots on foliage. These spots typically exhibit brown or tan centers surrounded by a darker margin. As the lesion matures, small black fruiting bodies called pseudothecia appear, signifying the production of new spores ready for dissemination.
