The genus Metschnikowia consists of yeast-like fungi that can act as significant plant pathogens. While some species are benign or symbiotic with insects, others are responsible for severe fruit decay, particularly in viticulture and fruit orchards. These fungi are known for their ability to thrive in high-sugar environments, making mature fruits a primary target for infection.

This pathogen primarily attacks crops such as grapes, strawberries, apples, and stone fruits. The infection is often opportunistic, requiring a pathway into the fruit, such as a physical injury, a bird peck, or insect damage. Once inside, the fungus colonizes the pulp, feeding on sugars and breaking down the fruit tissue with high efficiency.

Symptoms of Metschnikowia infection usually appear as areas of soft rot that expand rapidly across the fruit surface. Affected berries or fruits often show a creamy or whitish fungal growth and may emit a distinct fermented odor. Unlike some filamentous fungi, Metschnikowia leads to a rapid loss of firmness, turning the fruit into a mushy state that renders it entirely unmarketable.

The development of the disease is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high humidity and warm temperatures, which are typical during the pre-harvest season. The presence of insect vectors, particularly vinegar flies (Drosophila), plays a crucial role in spreading the fungus throughout a crop. Dense canopies and poor airflow can further exacerbate the infection rate by keeping the fruit surface moist.

Integrated management strategies are essential for limiting the impact of this pathogen on production. Recommended practices include:

  • Implementing robust pest control programs to minimize physical fruit damage.
  • Promoting good canopy management through pruning and leaf stripping to improve ventilation.
  • Applying specific protective fungicides during the pre-harvest window when fruit is most susceptible.
  • Ensuring rapid cooling and appropriate storage conditions post-harvest to slow down yeast multiplication.
