Metschnikowia pulcherrima is a yeast-like fungus that holds a significant place in both plant pathology and agricultural biotechnology. While it is naturally found on the surface of various fruits and flowers, it can transition into an opportunistic pathogen under favorable conditions, contributing to the development of fruit rots and fermentation-related decay.
The host range of this fungus is quite broad, including viticultural crops like grapes, as well as pome and stone fruits such as apples, pears, and peaches. Its presence is most noted during the ripening phase, as the fungus metabolizes the increasing sugar content in the fruit, which often results in rapid quality loss.
Symptoms of infection are characterized by soft, water-soaked lesions on the fruit skin. As the disease progresses, the internal tissues turn into a mushy consistency, often accompanied by a distinct, yeasty or fermentation-like odor. In later stages, a visible white-to-reddish yeast bloom may appear on the surface of the affected area.
Development and spread are primarily driven by high ambient humidity and damage to the fruit epidermis. Insects that pierce the skin of the fruit act as major vectors, introducing the yeast into the fruit interior. Once inside, the warm temperatures of late summer and early autumn accelerate the colonization process, making the spread of the disease unpredictable.
The detrimental impact of M. pulcherrima lies in its ability to destroy yield quality and reduce shelf life significantly. Conversely, modern research emphasizes its role as a biocontrol agent. Due to its ability to outcompete other fungi for nutrients and produce antimicrobial compounds, it is currently being used to suppress more aggressive pathogens like Botrytis cinerea.
