It functions as an epiphyte, meaning it colonizes the bark of trees, stones, or rotting wood strictly for support, without extracting nutrients from the host plant's living tissues.
Unlike true plant pathogens, Micarea prasina does not possess the biological capability to penetrate bark or damage the cambium layer. It does not cause rotting, chlorosis, or any physiological decline in plants. Therefore, it should not be categorized as a threat to agricultural or horticultural crops; it is simply a natural component of the local ecosystem's biodiversity.
The appearance of this lichen is characterized by a grainy or powdery green to grey-green crust on the tree bark. The thallus spreads across the surface, often becoming more vivid and noticeable during periods of high humidity. While it might look concerning to a novice grower, the lichen remains strictly on the superficial layers of the bark.
The development of Micarea prasina is driven by environmental factors, primarily high moisture levels, low levels of air pollution, and sufficient shading. It is commonly found in older orchards or woodlots where the bark is stable and the environment is undisturbed. In modern commercial orchards, the use of systemic fungicides and regular pruning effectively prevents the colonization of such epiphytes.
There is no economic damage associated with this lichen, and no specific chemical control measures are required or recommended. If the presence of the lichen is considered aesthetically undesirable, mechanical brushing during the dormant season or applying a traditional lime wash to the trunk is sufficient. These practices help maintain bark health without resorting to unnecessary chemical interventions.
