The Micareaceae family consists of crustose lichen-forming fungi that are common components of bark ecosystems. It is critical for agronomists to distinguish these organisms from true plant pathogens, as they are non-parasitic epiphytes that use trees merely as a substrate for attachment.
The biology of these fungi involves a symbiotic relationship with algae. They do not penetrate the living tissues of the host plant, meaning they do not directly cause necrosis or vascular diseases. However, their excessive accumulation can indicate that a tree lacks vigor, is aged, or is growing in a high-humidity environment.
They typically colonize various fruit-bearing trees and ornamental species that exhibit slow bark growth. The presence of these organisms is often concentrated in regions with high precipitation and low light levels, which prevents rapid desiccation of the lichen thallus during growth phases.
Diagnostic symptoms are identified by observing thin, granular, or crust-like patches on the surface of the bark. These patches may be grey, greenish, or brown. If a grower notices an explosion in lichen populations, it is often a cue to evaluate the overall health of the tree and the microclimate within the orchard.
To prevent the dominance of Micareaceae, producers should prioritize cultural practices that enhance plant vitality. Increasing airflow through proper pruning, maintaining adequate nutrition to stimulate bark shedding, and removing debris from the base of the tree are standard effective management strategies. Chemical control is rarely necessary if proper tree vigor is maintained.
