Microascales is an order of fungi within the class Sordariomycetes that includes several significant plant pathogens. These fungi are notorious for causing vascular wilts and various types of root and stem rots in both agricultural crops and forest trees, posing a threat to global food security and plantation health.
The pathogens belonging to this order, most notably from the genera Ceratocystis and Thielaviopsis, operate by colonizing the plant's vascular tissue or roots. Their lifecycle includes the production of specialized spores that can remain dormant in the soil or be dispersed by vectors, including insects such as bark beetles, which aid in the spread of infection.
The range of host plants affected by Microascales is broad, encompassing commodities like sweet potatoes, tobacco, coffee, and cocoa, as well as various ornamental shrubs. The economic impact is often severe, as infected plants frequently suffer from stunted growth, reduced yield, or complete mortality before reaching harvest maturity.
Diagnosis of Microascales infection is based on observing specific symptoms: systemic wilting of leaves despite adequate soil moisture, dark lesions on the root collar, and internal browning or blackening of the vascular bundles. These signs are often accompanied by the development of mold growth on the root surface under high humidity.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Prevention strategies include the use of certified disease-free seeds and seedlings, solarization of the soil to reduce inoculum levels, and strict field hygiene to prevent the movement of contaminated soil. Chemical control with fungicides can be effective as a preventive measure during the planting phase, but emphasis should be placed on crop rotation and soil drainage to minimize conditions that favor pathogen development.
