Microascus rot is a fungal disease caused by various species within the Microascus genus. These fungi typically reside in the soil as saprophytes but under favorable environmental conditions, they can act as opportunistic pathogens, targeting the root systems and crowns of a wide range of host plants.
This pathogen primarily affects horticultural and vegetable crops, including tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, often causing significant losses in greenhouse production. The infection can occur at any growth stage, posing a particular threat to delicate seedlings and high-yielding mature plants.
Symptoms are often characterized by yellowing of the lower foliage, wilting during peak daylight hours, and the development of dark brown lesions on the taproot and lateral roots. As the infection progresses, the root tissue softens, eventually leading to a complete collapse of the vascular system and plant death.
The development and spread of Microascus are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high soil moisture and poor drainage. Compacted soils that lack proper aeration provide an ideal environment for the fungus to thrive, allowing it to colonize the rhizosphere and weaken the plant's natural defenses.
