Microascus trigonosporus is a soil-borne fungus recognized as a significant phytopathogen responsible for causing various root rots, vascular wilt, and stem necrosis in a wide range of plants. As an ascomycete fungus, it demonstrates remarkable persistence in the soil environment, often surviving on decaying plant debris for extended periods.

The pathogen affects a broad spectrum of hosts, ranging from essential vegetable crops like tomatoes and cucumbers to ornamental greenhouse plants and nursery stock. It thrives by attacking the root systems of weakened or stressed plants, eventually compromising the vascular integrity and leading to a rapid decline in the plant's physiological condition.

Clinical signs of infection typically begin with wilting of the foliage, particularly during the warmest hours of the day, followed by chlorosis and necrotic lesions. If an infected plant is uprooted, the root system often appears discolored, mushy, or completely decayed. In severe cases, the entire root architecture is destroyed, resulting in plant lodging and death.
