Microbotryum is a genus of basidiomycetous fungi responsible for causing smut diseases in various plant species, particularly those in the Caryophyllaceae and Poaceae families. These fungi are notorious for colonizing the reproductive structures of the host plant, effectively transforming flowers into masses of dark spores.

The disease mechanism involves the systemic colonization of the host. The fungus grows within the plant tissues, eventually reaching the floral buds. As the host plant blooms, the pathogen replaces the anthers or ovaries with teliospores, ensuring the survival and dispersal of the fungus to new susceptible hosts.

Symptomatic plants are often characterized by blackened, dusty floral organs. In many cases, infected plants appear sterile, failing to produce viable seeds. While the vegetative parts of the plant may look relatively normal, the loss of reproductive output significantly impacts the overall health and population dynamics of the host species.

The spread of the pathogen is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly humidity and temperature levels during the flowering period. Insects and wind serve as the primary vectors for transferring spores from infected to healthy plants. Once established in an area, the pathogen can persist in the soil or remain dormant within seeds for extended periods.

Management strategies focus on prevention rather than cure, as internal systemic infections are difficult to treat once established. Effective control methods include the utilization of clean, certified seeds and the application of systemic fungicides as seed treatments.
