Description

Microbotryum bistortarum is a species of smut fungus that primarily infects plants of the Polygonaceae family, specifically targeting members of the Bistorta genus, such as the bistort or alpine knotweed. This pathogen is a systemic parasite, meaning it colonizes the host plant tissues, concentrating its development within the flowers and floral organs.

The primary symptom of infection is the replacement of the plant's normal floral parts with masses of fungal teliospores. Instead of healthy, pollen-producing anthers, the flowers become deformed and filled with a dusty, purple-brown to dark brown powder. This mass of spores is highly dispersive and is easily carried by wind or pollinating insects to healthy plants in the vicinity.

Favorable conditions for the development of Microbotryum bistortarum include moderate temperatures and high humidity during the flowering phase of the host plant. The fungus is well-adapted to survive dormant periods, with spores persisting in the soil or on plant debris until the next growing season. Primary infection typically occurs during early spring as the young shoots emerge from the soil.

The pathogenicity of this fungus leads to complete host sterility. Because the parasite destroys the reproductive apparatus of the plant, infected individuals are unable to produce viable seeds. This significantly limits the spread and natural regeneration of the host population, potentially causing a decline in density for wild plant stands in heavily infested areas.

Preventive measures focus on reducing the initial inoculum. Effective management strategies include:

  • Regular monitoring of host plant populations during the flowering period.
  • Physical removal and destruction of infected plants before the spores are released.
  • Maintaining soil health and adequate drainage to prevent stress that might favor fungal development.
  • Minimizing the spread of infested plant material to uninfected areas.
