The disease known as anther smut is caused by the fungus Microbotryum dianthorum. This pathogen is highly host-specific, primarily targeting plants within the Caryophyllaceae family, particularly those of the genus Dianthus. The fungus is a systemic pathogen, meaning it colonizes the host's vascular tissues and grows throughout the plant, often remaining undetected until the reproductive stage begins.

The primary hosts affected are wild and cultivated carnations (Dianthus species). The pathogen infiltrates the host tissues early in the growing season. As the plant develops, the fungal mycelium follows the growth of the stems, eventually concentrating in the floral organs, which leads to the characteristic transformation of the host's reproductive parts into fungal spore production structures.

Symptoms of the infection manifest primarily in the flowers. The most definitive sign is the replacement of the anthers' contents with a dark, powdery mass of teliospores. Infected flowers often appear deformed, fail to open properly, or show signs of stunted growth. While the vegetative part of the plant may appear relatively normal, the loss of floral viability makes this disease particularly devastating for ornamental plant production.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Microbotryum dianthorum. Cool, humid weather facilitates the germination of spores and subsequent infection of new plants. Furthermore, the disease is efficiently spread by pollinators, such as bees and flies, which carry the teliospores from infected to healthy flowers during foraging, effectively disseminating the pathogen within a garden or field.

Management and prevention strategies focus on limiting the spread of spores. Infected plants should be identified and removed immediately, preferably including the root system, to prevent the buildup of soil-borne inoculum. Implementing strict sanitation practices, using disease-free seeds, and maintaining adequate plant spacing to improve air circulation are essential steps in reducing the incidence and severity of the disease in commercial and residential settings.
