Description

Anther smut is a plant disease caused by the fungus Microbotryum lychnidis-dioicae. This pathogen is a highly specialized parasite that primarily attacks members of the Caryophyllaceae family, most notably species within the genus Silene, such as white campion.

The disease is characterized by systemic infection. The fungal mycelium spreads throughout the host plant's stem and leaves. As the plant begins to develop reproductive organs, the fungus migrates into the floral tissues, effectively hijacking the plant’s reproductive machinery.

The diagnostic symptom of anther smut is the replacement of pollen with a dark, powdery mass of fungal teliospores within the anthers of the flowers. This prevents the host from producing viable pollen and, in many cases, leads to total reproductive failure, rendering the plant sterile.

The spread of the pathogen is mediated by insect pollinators. Bees and butterflies visiting infected flowers become coated with fungal spores and carry them to healthy flowers, thereby facilitating the spread of the infection. This transmission method is highly efficient, particularly in habitats with high plant density.

The economic impact of the disease is significant in seed production, as it leads to complete yield loss for affected individual plants. Management strategies focus on sanitation, specifically the removal and destruction of infected plants before they can release spores, and the use of healthy, pathogen-free seeds.
