Microbotryum scolymi is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for causing smut disease in globe artichokes (Cynara scolymus). As a member of the basidiomycetes group, it specifically targets the plant's reproductive structures. This disease is a significant concern for growers, as it directly damages the edible portion of the crop, compromising its marketability and structural integrity.
The primary symptom of this infection is the replacement of healthy floral tissue with masses of dark, powdery spores. These spores typically develop inside the artichoke buds or on the stems, causing severe deformity. As the disease progresses, the flower heads fail to develop properly and become filled with the fungal mycelium and spores, making them entirely unsuitable for harvest or consumption.
The development and spread of Microbotryum scolymi are highly dependent on environmental conditions. High humidity and moderate temperatures facilitate the germination of teliospores, which can remain viable in the soil or on crop debris for extended periods. Once conditions are optimal, the fungus infects the developing buds, utilizing the plant's resources to propagate its own lifecycle.
