The Microcaliciaceae family belongs to the order Caliciales and consists of fungi that are often lichenized or saprotrophic in nature. Unlike typical crop pathogens, these fungi do not cause major epidemics in agricultural systems, acting primarily as decomposers that thrive on dead wood, bark, and plant debris.
The pathogens, if classified as such, are characterized by their tiny, stalked fruiting bodies known as apothecia, which appear as small pins. They function primarily as saprotrophs, meaning they obtain nutrients from decomposing organic matter. Some species are also known for their symbiotic associations with algae, forming crustose lichen structures.

They often serve as indicators of the decomposition process in wooded areas.
