In an agricultural and biotechnological context, it acts as a competitor that disrupts the monoculture stability of high-value algal species.
The agent is a member of the Eustigmatophyceae class. It triggers a condition where the dominant culture experiences severe physiological stress. This biological imbalance is characterized by the displacement of the target crop, leading to significant economic losses in facilities that rely on pure-strain cultivation.
Symptomatology involves rapid changes in the optical density and pigment composition of the culture medium. Early detection can be achieved through regular monitoring of cell morphology via microscopy, as infected systems often display a shift toward the dense, rounded cell structure typical of the Microchloropsis genus.
Environmental conditions that favor the spread of this pathogen include thermal stability within the optimal growth range of the genus and the presence of residual nitrogen or phosphorous in the media after harvest. Its opportunistic nature allows it to colonize systems that have had even minor lapses in sterilization procedures.
