While recognized primarily for its potential in biofuel research, its accidental introduction into greenhouse nutrient systems can lead to significant operational challenges for growers.
The biological characteristics of this organism allow it to thrive in high-nutrient saline or brackish environments. In a cultivation system, Microchloropsis salina acts as a competitor for light and nutrients. Its rapid reproduction rate allows it to outcompete beneficial microflora and form biofilms on hydroponic pipes and pumps, leading to clogging and equipment failure.
Symptoms of an outbreak include the nutrient solution turning bright green, the formation of slimy green deposits on the root systems of plants, and a noticeable drop in dissolved oxygen levels. As the density of the algae increases, the availability of essential minerals for the crop is significantly reduced, resulting in nutrient deficiency symptoms in the plants, such as yellowing and stunted growth.
Development conditions are heavily influenced by excessive lighting intensity combined with nitrogen-rich water environments.
