Microdochium blight is a fungal plant disease caused by pathogens belonging to the Microdochiaceae family. The most prominent species in this group is Microdochium nivale, which is widely known for causing snow mold on winter cereals and grasses, as well as Fusarium-like infections on the heads of various crops.
This pathogen primarily targets cereal grains, including winter wheat, rye, and barley, but it can also affect various turfgrass species. The disease impacts plants throughout their development, causing pre-emergence damping-off, seedling blight, and late-season head blight, significantly affecting the overall productivity of the crop.
The visual symptoms typically include water-soaked lesions that eventually develop into brown or pinkish spots. In humid conditions, these spots are covered with a dense mycelial growth, which represents the sporulation of the fungus. Infected grain often appears shriveled and may show a distinct pink discoloration due to the presence of spores.
The development of the disease is favored by cool, wet weather conditions, particularly high humidity during early spring or late autumn. The fungus survives as mycelium or spores in infected plant debris, soil, and even within the seed, making it a persistent threat in regions with temperate climates and high moisture levels.
The economic impact of Microdochium blight is severe, leading to reduced stand density, poor grain development, and significant yield losses. Furthermore, contaminated grain can contain mycotoxins, which poses a substantial risk to food safety and may limit the marketability of the harvested crops.
