Microdochium patch, primarily caused by the fungal pathogen Microdochium nivale, is a destructive disease affecting various cereals and turfgrass species. Often associated with the condition known as pink snow mold, the pathogen thrives in cool, moist conditions. It is particularly problematic for winter wheat, rye, and barley, as well as amenity turf, potentially causing widespread damage during the dormant season.

The characteristic symptoms include the appearance of small, water-soaked spots on leaf blades that gradually expand. Under high humidity, a dense, white to pinkish mycelium becomes visible on the affected plant tissue. Eventually, the infected parts turn necrotic and die. If left unchecked, the disease can lead to large, irregular patches of dead turf or thinning cereal stands.

The development and spread of Microdochium are driven by cool, wet weather. The pathogen is capable of growing at temperatures near freezing, making it highly active during autumn, mild winters, and early spring. Prolonged leaf wetness and high soil moisture, especially under snow cover that prevents the ground from freezing, provide an ideal environment for rapid colonization and sporulation.
