Microdochium majus is a significant fungal pathogen that causes seedling blight, root rot, and ear blight in various cereal crops. It is widely recognized for its role in the development of snow mold and is considered a major contributor to reduced grain yields in many agricultural regions globally.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are small-grain cereals, including winter wheat, rye, barley, and triticale. Because the fungus thrives in cool and moist conditions, it is particularly prevalent in temperate climates, affecting both the early establishment of seedlings and the final stages of ear maturation.

The symptoms are highly distinct under humid conditions. On seedlings, it manifests as necrotic lesions on the coleoptile, often resulting in damping-off. On mature plants, it causes brown or bleached spots on the stem bases and ear structures. A key identification feature is the presence of pale pinkish fungal spores on the infected tissues.

Development is heavily favored by cool weather (typically 5 to 15 degrees Celsius) and high atmospheric humidity or prolonged rainfall. The pathogen persists in soil, crop debris, and on the surface of seeds. Spore dispersal is facilitated by rain-splash and wind, which can spread the infection rapidly throughout a field during the flowering stage.

Recommended strategies include the use of certified, fungicide-treated seeds and the implementation of crop rotations that break the life cycle of the fungus.
