This fungus is a significant concern for both botanical collections and commercial succulent nurseries.

The primary hosts of this disease are various cacti, particularly those with fleshy pads like opuntias. The fungus attacks the dermal layers of the plant, often capitalizing on mechanical injuries or environmental stress that compromises the plant's natural defense mechanisms. Once established, the mycelium penetrates deeper into the plant tissue, causing internal damage that disrupts nutrient and water transport.

Symptoms of an infection typically manifest as distinct, dark-colored necrotic lesions on the surface of the cactus pads.
