Description
Lettuce anthracnose, caused by the fungus Microdochium panattonianum, is a severe fungal disease that affects various lettuce cultivars worldwide. The pathogen belongs to the Ascomycota division and is known for its ability to persist in soil and crop debris for several seasons, making it a persistent threat in both commercial and greenhouse lettuce production.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are plants of the Asteraceae family, with lettuce (Lactuca sativa) being the most economically impacted. The fungus is host-specific but can survive on certain weed species, which act as secondary reservoirs during the off-season. Infected seeds may also play a minor but significant role in the long-distance transmission of the disease.
Initial symptoms include small, water-soaked, circular spots appearing on the undersides of the leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots expand, turning brown and often developing a distinct chlorotic halo. Under high humidity conditions, the centers of the lesions can become necrotic, leading to leaf perforation. In severe cases, the entire leaf surface may become covered in spores, showing a characteristic white-to-pinkish fungal mat.
Epidemics are most commonly triggered by cool, wet weather conditions, specifically prolonged periods of moisture on leaf surfaces. Splashing rain and overhead irrigation are the primary vectors for spore dispersal within a field. The pathogen thrives in temperatures between 15°C and 20°C, and a film of water is essential for the germination of conidia and successful host penetration.
Integrated pest management is critical for controlling Microdochium panattonianum. Key strategies include practicing a minimum three-year crop rotation, utilizing resistant or tolerant varieties when available, and ensuring proper field sanitation by removing all infected crop residues. Fungicide applications, specifically those targeting fungal spores, should be implemented preventively or at the earliest onset of symptoms to reduce potential crop loss.
