Micromphale is a genus of fungi belonging to the Marasmiaceae family, frequently encountered in agricultural and forestry environments as wood-decay pathogens or saprotrophs. While these fungi are essential for the breakdown of forest litter, they can cause significant damage when they colonize living woody plants, especially those already under stress.
The disease involves the enzymatic degradation of lignin and cellulose within the woody tissues of the host. The pathogen acts as a facultative parasite, transitioning from organic matter decomposition to actively infecting the vascular system of trees and shrubs, which compromises their structural integrity and vital functions.
Plants affected by Micromphale typically include various deciduous tree species and woody ornamental shrubs. The pathogen thrives in habitats characterized by constant moisture, lack of proper aeration, and poor sunlight, making high-density plantings or waterlogged gardens particularly susceptible to infection outbreaks.
Symptomatology includes softening of the bark at the base of the stem, the development of a distinct smell of decay, and the emergence of small, often inconspicuous fungal fruiting bodies.
