Description

The Micropeltidaceae family consists of fungi, often associated with the order Chaetothyriales, which typically function as epiphytes or minor parasites on plant foliage. These fungi are morphologically recognized by their small, shield-shaped fruiting bodies, known as thyriothecia, which develop directly on the epidermis of leaves.

The disease manifested by these fungi is characterized as foliar spot disease. While rarely lethal to the host plant in the short term, the presence of these colonies interferes with the plant's photosynthetic efficiency by shading the leaf tissue and potentially causing premature necrosis or leaf drop in heavy infestations.

A diverse range of tropical and subtropical plants, including many ornamental shrubs and evergreen trees, are susceptible to infection. The symptoms usually present as discrete, dark, circular spots on the upper or lower leaf surfaces, often accompanied by a crusty texture due to the developing fungal structures.

Development and spread are heavily dependent on moisture. These fungi thrive in high-humidity environments where leaf surfaces remain wet for extended periods. Spores are primarily dispersed through rain splash, making the lower canopy and densely packed greenhouse environments the most frequent sites for initial infection.

Managing Micropeltidaceae requires a combination of improved air circulation and sanitation to interrupt the disease cycle. Recommended control strategies include:

  • Pruning foliage to increase airflow and sunlight penetration.
  • Prompt removal and destruction of infected leaf litter.
  • Application of protective fungicides during humid growth phases.
