Description
Micropeltis disease is a fungal infection caused by fungi of the genus Micropeltis, which belong to the Microthyriaceae family. These pathogens are recognized by the formation of distinctive superficial fruiting bodies known as thyriothecia on the surface of the host leaves.
The disease typically manifests as discrete, dark, shield-like spots scattered across the foliage. Unlike many other pathogens that penetrate deeply into plant tissues, Micropeltis species often exhibit an epiphytic or hemiparasitic lifestyle, drawing nutrients from the leaf surface and causing localized tissue distress.
A wide variety of ornamental plants, broad-leaved trees, and tropical species are susceptible to this pathogen. In horticultural settings, it is commonly observed on plants kept in high-humidity environments, which mimics the natural conditions where these fungi thrive.
The development of the fungus is highly dependent on humidity and temperature. Spore dispersal occurs primarily through splashing water, such as rain or overhead irrigation, allowing the infection to spread rapidly among neighboring plants when conditions remain moist for extended periods.
To effectively manage and prevent the spread of Micropeltis, growers should focus on cultural practices and targeted chemical interventions. Maintaining adequate spacing between plants to improve airflow is essential, as is the removal and destruction of infected plant debris to reduce the initial inoculum level.
