Microsporidiosis is a significant plant disease caused by obligate intracellular parasites belonging to the phylum Microsporidia. These pathogens infect plant tissues at the cellular level, leading to systemic disruption of growth patterns and metabolic activities, which can result in severe crop failure if left unmanaged.

The causative agent reproduces through the formation of spores, which are highly resilient and capable of persisting in the soil or plant debris for extended periods. Once they enter the host tissue—typically through physical wounds or vectors—the microsporidia exploit the host's cellular machinery to facilitate their rapid multiplication.

Various crops, including cereals, forage plants, and several horticultural species, are susceptible to infection.
