Description
Microstrobilinia is a genus of fungi responsible for causing specialized diseases in the male cones (microstrobili) of coniferous trees. By attacking these reproductive structures, the fungus effectively interferes with the pollination cycle, leading to reduced seed production and diminished fitness of the host population.
The disease is caused by fungi belonging to the order Helotiales. These pathogens typically infiltrate the developing tissues of the microstrobili during the spring season. The life cycle of the fungus is tightly synchronized with the development stages of the host, allowing it to colonize the susceptible tissues rapidly.
Coniferous species, particularly those in the Pinaceae and Cupressaceae families, are the primary hosts for this pathogen. Infections are most frequently reported in intensive nursery environments or dense plantation stands, where humidity levels and host proximity allow for significant spore dispersal and colonization.
Symptoms of an infection include early browning and necrosis of the male cones, which become brittle and dry out before they can disperse pollen. In some cases, distinct fungal fruiting bodies may appear on the surface of the infected organs, confirming the presence of the pathogen in the stand.
Effective management and prevention strategies involve strict sanitation practices, such as the pruning and disposal of affected branches to reduce the primary inoculum load. Additionally, maintaining optimal plant spacing and using targeted fungicide applications during the early development of microstrobili can significantly suppress the spread of the disease.
