Description

Microstroma is a genus of parasitic fungi known to cause specific leaf spot diseases in various woody plants. These fungi are classified as basidiomycetes and primarily infect the foliage, causing significant physiological stress and reducing the photosynthetic efficiency of the host tree.

The disease is most commonly observed on walnut trees (Juglans) and various species of oak (Quercus). By colonizing the leaves and petioles, the fungus disrupts the plant's vascular and metabolic processes, which can lead to premature senescence and a decline in overall tree vigor over several seasons.

Typical symptoms involve the formation of chlorotic or necrotic spots on the upper leaf surface. The most distinct sign of infection is the presence of a white, powder-like mass on the underside of the leaf, which corresponds to the fungus’s sporulation stage. In severe cases, infected leaves will curl, turn brown, and drop prematurely from the tree.

The spread and development of the pathogen are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures during the growing season. Conidia, the asexual spores, are dispersed by wind, splashing rain, or insect vectors, effectively spreading the infection throughout the canopy and to neighboring plants.

Managing Microstroma requires an integrated pest management approach focused on reducing inoculum levels. Essential practices include the thorough removal and destruction of fallen leaves in autumn, as well as pruning out severely infected branches. Chemical control, involving the application of fungicides during the early stages of leaf development, can also be highly effective in preventing disease progression.
