Milesina is a genus of rust fungi that primarily affects fern species. As an obligate parasite, it disrupts the host's metabolic functions, leading to significant physiological stress. The disease is characterized by the formation of characteristic rust-colored pustules on the undersides of the fronds, identifying it as a typical rust-type infection.
The host range of Milesina is restricted mainly to ferns, although many species in this genus are heteroecious, meaning they require an alternate host—typically conifers like fir trees—to complete their complex biological life cycle. Understanding this relationship is crucial for managing the disease in botanical gardens or nurseries.
Early signs of infection appear as small, chlorotic spots on the frond surfaces. As the fungus progresses, these spots develop into spore-bearing pustules (uredinia) that release yellow or orange powder-like spores. Heavy infestations lead to extensive necrosis, yellowing of the fronds, and premature defoliation, which severely stunts plant growth.
Environmental conditions play a pivotal role in the development of the disease. High relative humidity and moderate temperatures create an ideal microclimate for spore germination and colonization.
