Milesina blechni is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for causing rust disease in various species of ferns. It belongs to the order Pucciniales and is known for its ability to impact the health and aesthetic quality of ferns by infiltrating the host's foliar tissues to extract nutrients for its reproduction.

The primary hosts of this fungus are ferns within the genus Blechnum. The disease specifically targets the fronds, where the fungus creates specialized structures to produce and release spores, thereby interfering with the plant's essential physiological processes like photosynthesis.

Initial symptoms are often subtle, appearing as small, powdery yellow or brown pustules on the underside of the fronds. As the infection progresses, chlorotic spots develop on the upper surface, followed by necrosis of the tissue. If left untreated, the fronds will brown, wilt, and drop prematurely, causing stunted growth.

The development and spread of Milesina blechni are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, poor air circulation, and moderate temperatures. Spores are primarily disseminated by air currents, splashing water, or physical contact with contaminated tools during pruning or maintenance activities.

Effective management requires strict sanitation and cultural practices. Growers should remove infected fronds immediately to reduce the inoculum load. To minimize the risk of outbreaks, ensure proper spacing between plants to improve airflow, avoid overhead irrigation, and apply appropriate fungicides if the disease is persistent. Proactive monitoring in nurseries and greenhouses is essential to catch the rust before it becomes widespread.
