Description
Mischococcales are a group of yellow-green algae that can act as opportunistic pathogens or detrimental factors in agricultural environments. While they are distinct from typical fungal plant pathogens, their proliferation in greenhouses and hydroponic systems can significantly impair plant health by altering the soil surface environment.
These organisms primarily affect greenhouse vegetables, seedlings, and decorative plants. They thrive in damp conditions and high-nutrient environments, often colonizing the surface of potting soil, peat-based substrates, or mineral wool. Crops grown under intensive care are particularly susceptible to this type of algae overgrowth.
Symptoms are identified by the formation of a green or slimy crust on the soil surface, which can spread to the stem base. This layer acts as a physical barrier, significantly reducing soil aeration and gas exchange. As a result, plants exhibit stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis) of lower leaves, and increased vulnerability to secondary root rot infections.
Development and spread are facilitated by excessive moisture, poor drainage, and high-intensity artificial or natural lighting. Constant high humidity and inadequate air circulation in greenhouses create an ideal habitat for Mischococcales to bloom. Once established, they can rapidly outcompete beneficial microflora and create a damp, acidic environment near the root zone.
Management of Mischococcales requires a robust preventive strategy focusing on environmental control. Key protective measures include:
- maintaining proper ventilation and air circulation;
- adjusting irrigation schedules to allow surface drying;
- ensuring effective drainage in pots and hydroponic benches;
- applying copper-based algaecides where necessary.
