Mischococcus is a genus of yellow-green algae that frequently colonizes the surface of moist soil or growing media in greenhouse environments. While not a traditional fungal pathogen, it is considered a problematic organism in professional horticulture because it creates a biological barrier on the substrate surface, which interferes with the optimal development of young plants and seedlings.

This organism primarily targets crops grown in protected environments, including vegetable seedlings, ornamental flowers, and plants cultivated in hydroponic systems. Whenever moisture levels remain consistently high and light is abundant, Mischococcus can spread rapidly, covering the surface of the growing media and impacting plant health.

Symptoms of an infestation are characterized by the appearance of a greenish or yellowish-brown slime on the soil surface. Over time, these colonies may form a thick, crust-like layer that effectively seals the soil, preventing proper aeration and gas exchange. As a result, plants show signs of stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and root system distress due to the lack of oxygen.

The development of Mischococcus is facilitated by high humidity, poor air circulation, and overwatering. Light is a critical factor, as direct sun exposure to wet media surfaces encourages the rapid vegetative growth of these algae. The dense mat formed by the algae also competes with plants for nutrients located in the top layer of the substrate.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

  • Allowing the top layer of the growing medium to dry slightly between irrigation cycles to discourage algae growth.
  • Improving greenhouse ventilation to reduce overall humidity levels.
  • Using sterile growing media and ensuring good drainage in nursery pots.
  • Regularly disturbing or hoeing the soil surface to break up any developing algae mats and improve aeration.
  • Applying appropriate algicides or copper-based treatments when the infestation becomes severe to maintain a healthy root zone environment.
