Mixia is a genus of fungi classified within the class Exobasidiomycetes. These fungi act as obligate parasites on certain plant species, primarily ferns. The infection process involves the penetration of plant tissues, leading to systemic physiological disturbances and visible physical deformities of the host's vegetative organs.

The host range is predominantly limited to members of the Osmundaceae family. The pathogen Mixia osmundae is the most studied member of this genus. It infects the leaf tissue, where it establishes a parasitic relationship that redirects nutrients from the host plant to support its own reproduction and spore dispersal.

Symptoms of an infection typically manifest as irregular yellow or whitish patches on the underside of the fronds. These areas are often accompanied by hypertrophy, where the plant tissue swells and becomes distorted. Over time, these infected patches become necrotic, leading to the withering and premature death of the affected leaf segments.

The development of the disease is heavily reliant on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus produces spores that are easily disseminated by wind, water splashes, and physical contact between plants. High plant density in garden settings further exacerbates the risk of rapid disease transmission.

Effective management and prevention strategies are essential for controlling the disease. Key practices include the immediate removal and destruction of symptomatic leaves to reduce inoculum pressure, ensuring adequate spacing between plants to improve air circulation, and avoiding overhead irrigation. Chemical control using registered fungicides may be necessary in severe outbreaks to protect the remaining plant population.
